Ethanol Rail Movements Update – Jul ’16

Apr ’16 ethanol rail movements of 15.2 million barrels declined 26.3% from Mar ’16 figures on a daily average basis, finishing at an 18 month low. Movement of Fuel Ethanol by Rail - Jul 16 Apr ’16 ethanol rail movements finished lower on a year-over-year (YOY) basis for the first time in nine months, finishing 17.1% below the previous year figures. Ethanol rail movements remain up 3.5% YOY throughout the first third of 2016, however, despite the most recent YOY decline. Movement of Fuel Ethanol by Rail - Jul 16 Ethanol rail movements have ranged from 54% – 71% of monthly ethanol production since the beginning of 2014. Apr ’16 ethanol rail movements accounted for 54.3% of monthly production, which was only slightly higher than the record low of 53.7% experienced during Jun ’14. Movement of Fuel Ethanol by Rail - Jul 16 Ethanol rail movement figures are broken out by Petroleum Administration for Defense District (PADD) for both originating rail movements and destinations of shipments. The U.S. is regionally divided into five PADDs, which include the East Coast, Midwest, Gulf Coast, Rocky Mountain and West Coast. Petroleum Admin for Defense Districts - Jul 16 Nearly 99% of rail movements originated in PADD 2 (Midwest) during Apr ’16, with the remaining volumes originating in PADD 3 (Gulf Coast). Over 6.6 million barrels of ethanol rail movements were destined to PADD 1 (East Coast) during Apr ’16, leading all regional districts. Apr 16 US Fuel Ethanol Rail Movements by Destination - Jul 16 Ethanol rail movements destined to PADD 1 (East Coast) accounted for over two thirds of the total shipments during Apr ’16. Combined shipments to PADD 1 (East Coast), PADD 5 (West Coast) and PADD 3 (Gulf Coast) consisted of over 90% of total ethanol rail movements, with minimal amounts being shipped to PADD 2 (Midwest), PADD 4 (Rocky Mountain) and Canada.
