U.S. Dairy Cow Slaughter Update – Oct ’16

According to USDA, Sep ’16 U.S. dairy cow slaughter of 245,100 head increased 8.9% seasonally MOM but finished 2.7% lower on a YOY basis when normalized for slaughter days. U.S. dairy cow slaughter rates have declined on a YOY basis throughout four of the past six months however the seasonal increase in slaughter rates of 8.9% was larger than the ten year average August – September increase of 6.3%. Monthly US Dairy Cow Slaughter - Oct 16 ’15-’16 annual dairy cow slaughter finished down 0.4% as rates have fallen 1.5% below the previous year levels over the second half of the production season. Declines in slaughter rates have contributed to the U.S. milk cow herd finishing at the highest figures experienced throughout the past 18 years over recent months. The total U.S. milk cow herd currently stands at 9.34 million head, which is 21,000 head more than September of last year. Monthly US Dairy Cow Slaughter - Oct 16 The most significant MOM increase in dairy cow slaughter was exhibited in Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada). Figures for Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin) were withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual operators. Sep 16 MOM US Dairy Cow Slaughter by Standard Federal Region - Oct 16 The largest YOY decline in dairy cow slaughter was exhibited in Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada), followed by Standard Federal Region 4 (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee). Sep 16 YOY US Dairy Cow Slaughter by Standard Federal Region - Oct 16 Dairy cow slaughter within Standard Federal Region 6 (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) increased 7.6% MOM but remained 1.7% lower YOY. Monthly slaughter rates had reached record high levels during Jan ’16 as effects from Winter Storm Goliath were experienced, however slaughter levels have declined by a total of 9.7% YOY throughout the past seven months. Monthly US Dairy Cow Slaughter Region 6 - Oct 16 Dairy cow slaughter within Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada) increased 14.1% MOM but finished down 7.1% YOY when normalized for slaughter days. ’15-’16 annual dairy cow slaughter finished down 1.3% YOY within Standard Federal Region 9.
