U.S. Milk Production Update – Jul ’14

According to USDA, Jun ’14 U.S. milk production was up 1.9% YOY, at 17,265 million pounds. The YOY monthly change was the largest in ten months. Midwestern production continues to rebound from adverse weather conditions, with aggregate YOY production in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois reaching an eight month high. Western production rebounded from three straight months of YOY milk production declines, with aggregate milk production in California, Idaho, Washington and Oregon up 2.0% YOY. Western milk production continues to trail production levels obtained earlier in the year. Production gains continue to be led by Texas, which posted an 8.3% YOY gain. Monthly US Milk Production - Jul Jun ’14 milk production declined by 1.3% MOM, but was up slightly MOM when normalized on a ten year average seasonality index as the U.S. dairy herd continues to expand. The number of milk cows on farms increased by 11,000 head in Jun ’14, to 9,266,000 total head, the highest figure since Apr ’12. The U.S. dairy herd increased for the seventh straight month in Jun ’14, increasing a combined 68,000 head over the period. The number of milk cows on farms and milk per cow yield numbers were not available from Mar ’13 – Jun ’13 due to government sequestration so no YOY analysis is available. Jun ’14 milk per cow yield was down 1.4% from last month on a daily average basis but was the largest June per cow yield on record. ‘13-’14 YTD milk production is up 1.0% YOY through the first three quarters of the production season, which is substantially less than Europe and New Zealand production gains.
