U.S. Milk Production Update – Sep ’14

According to USDA, Aug ’14 U.S. milk production was up 2.5% YOY, at 17,217 million pounds. The YOY percentage increase in production was the second largest in over two years despite being tempered to an extent by high relative Aug ’13 production. Aug ’14 production was 4.1% higher than the previous three year average August production. Midwestern milk production continues to stabilize, with aggregate YOY production in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois up 0.9%. Western YOY production gains, consisting of aggregate production in California, Idaho, Washington and Oregon, also trailed the overall national gain in YOY production, up 1.8%. YOY percentage production gains were led by Florida (+8.4%), Colorado (+8.0%), Michigan (+6.7%), Texas (+6.2%) and Kansas (+5.8%). Monthly US Milk Production - Sep The number of milk cows on farms declined by 1,000 head in Aug ’14 from the USDA revised Jul ’14 figure, but increased 4,000 head based on the originally published Jul ’14 milk cow figure reported last month. The total milk cow herd stands at 9,276,000 head, 78,000 head more than nine months ago. Milk per cow yield was up 2.0% YOY, increasing to a new July record of 1,856 lbs. ‘13-’14 YTD milk production is up 1.4% YOY with one month remaining in the production season, which is substantially less than recent Europe and New Zealand production gains.
