U.S. Cattle on Feed Update – Nov ’14

According to USDA, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the U.S. for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.6 million head on November 1, 2014. The Nov ’14 U.S. cattle on feed supply was up 0.5%, or 48,000 head from November 1st of last year. The YOY increase in monthly cattle on feed supply was the first in the last 27 months. US Cattle on Feed - Nov Placements in feedlots during Oct ’14 totaled 2.36 million head, down 0.9%, or 21,000 head from October of last year. Placements for those weighing 800 pounds or more increased 10.4% YOY, while placements for those weighing 700-799 pounds, 600-699 pounds and under 600 pounds declined by 8.5%, 1.4% and 4.2% YOY, respectively. Placements were the second lowest figure recorded for the month of October since the series began in 1996. US Cattle Placements - Nov After deferred placements of heavier animals in the summer months, weights in Aug – Oct ’14 indicate a continued trend towards heavier placements relative to last year. US Cattle Placements by Weight Group - Nov Oct ’14 cattle placements under 700 pounds declined 2.9% YOY. Cattle placements under 700 pounds were generally higher throughout the ’13-’14 production season, finishing up 4.2% YOY, however placements under 700 pounds have declined 2.8% over the past three months. US Cattle Placements, Under 700lbs - Nov Oct ’14 cattle placements 700 pounds or heavier increased 1.6% YOY. Cattle placements 700 pounds or heavier finished the ’13-’14 production season down 3.3% after declining 10.2% from Mar ’14 – Aug ’14, but have increased 1.6% throughout the past two months. US Cattle Placements, Over 700lbs - Nov Marketings of fed cattle during Oct ’14 totaled 1.63 million head, down 7.8%, or 137,400 head, from October of 2013. Total marketings of fed cattle have declined 6.9% throughout the past four months, with Oct ’14 marketings being the lowest October figure since the series began in 1996.
