Weekly Railroad Service Report Update – 1/22/15

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) published the 14th weekly service report update for Class 1 railroads spanning data acquired from January 11th to January 17th. Overall, ethanol and grain transportation speeds continued to decline off of the highs experienced in the first week of January while weekly cars held 48-120 hours increased and weekly cars held longer than 120 hours declined. Ethanol Transportation: • Average train speeds for ethanol transportation declined 3.9% week-over-week to 20.5 MPH. Ethanol train speeds remain 4.2% higher than the initial data point released 13 weeks ago but were 1.6% lower than the previous 13 week average ethanol train speeds. Weekly Average Train Speed-Ethanol - Jan 22 • Ethanol cars held 48-120 hours rebounded slightly from the previous week decline, increasing 8.4%. Ethanol cars held 48-120 hours remain 20.5% higher than the initial data point released 13 weeks ago but were 9.4% lower than the previous 13 week average cars held 48-120 hours. Weekly Cars Held 48-120 Hours-Ethanol - Jan 22 • Ethanol cars held longer than 120 hours declined for the second week in a row, falling 34.8%. Ethanol cars held longer than 120 hours remain 12.6% higher than the initial data point released 13 weeks ago but were 16.9% lower than the previous 13 week average cars held longer than 120 hours. Weekly Cars Held Greater Than 48-120 Hours-Ethanol - Jan 22 Grain Transportation: • Average train speeds for grain transportation declined slightly week-over-week, down 0.3% to 21.7 MPH. Grain train speeds remain 4.7% higher than the initial data point released 13 weeks ago and 4.9% higher than the previous 13 week average grain train speeds. Weekly Average Train Speed-Grain - Jan 22 • Grain cars held 48-120 hours rebounded slightly from the previous week decline, increasing 14.3%. Grain cars held 48-120 hours remain 40.7% higher than the initial data point released 13 weeks ago but were 10.4% lower than the previous 13 week average cars held 48-120 hours. Weekly Cars Held 48-120 Hours-Grain - Jan 22 • Grain cars held longer than 120 hours declined for the second week in a row, falling 7.7%. Grain cars held longer than 120 hours remain 20.9% higher than the initial data point released 13 weeks ago and 0.4% higher than the previous 13 week average cars held longer than 120 hours.
