U.S. Acreage Revisions Update – Aug ’19

Revised corn and soybean planting figures were recently released in an updated USDA Crop Production report. Excessive rainfall had previously delayed plantings at the time of the initial surveys which took place in June. Updated corn and soybean planting figures are shown within the following: Corn According to revisions to USDA’s acreage figures, corn planted acres for 2019 of 90.0 million acres finished 1.7 million acres, or 1.8%, below the June estimated figure but remained 1.0% above the previous year figure. Revised corn planted acres for 2019 were led by Iowa (13.6 million acres), followed by Illinois (10.7 million acres) and Nebraska (10.0 million acres). The aforementioned states combined to account for over a third of the total U.S. corn plantings. Corn planted acres for 2019 were revised most significantly lower from the June figures within Ohio (-500,000 acres), followed by Indiana (-400,000 acres), Illinois (-300,000 acres), Michigan (-300,000 acres) and South Dakota (-300,000 acres). Kansas (+500,000 acres) and Texas (+300,000 acres) experienced the largest increases in corn planted acres from the June figures. Revised corn acres finished most significantly higher on a YOY basis throughout Kansas (+950,000 acres), followed by Iowa (+400,000 acres) and Nebraska (+400,000 acres). South Dakota (-800,000 acres) experienced the largest YOY decline in corn plantings, followed by Ohio (-700,000 acres). Soybeans Revised soybean planted acres for 2019 of 76.7 million acres finished 3.3 million acres, or 4.2%, below the June estimated figure and 14.0% below the previous year, reaching an eight year low level. Revised soybean planted acres for 2019 were led by Illinois (10.0 million acres), followed by Iowa (9.2 million acres) and Minnesota (6.9 million acres). The aforementioned states combined to account for over a third of all U.S. soybean plantings. Soybean planted acres for 2019 were revised most significantly lower from the June figures within South Dakota (-900,000 acres), followed by Ohio (-500,000 acres) and Michigan (-350,000 acres). Iowa (+100,000 acres) and Indiana (+100,000 acres) experienced the largest increases in soybean planted acres from the June figures. Revised soybean acres finished most significantly lower on a YOY basis throughout South Dakota (-2,150,000 acres), followed by North Dakota (-1,200,000 acres) and Minnesota (-900,000 acres).
