Chinese Dairy Imports Update – Dec ’16

Executive Summary Chinese dairy import figures provided by GTIS were recently updated with values spanning through Nov ’16. Highlights from the updated report include:
  • Nov ’16 total Chinese dairy import volumes increased on a YOY basis for the 15th first time in the past 16 months, finishing up 20.4% and reaching an eight month high.
  • Chinese dairy import volumes originating from within New Zealand exceeded volumes originating from within the EU-28 for the first time in eight months during Nov ’16, despite growth within EU-28 volumes remaining higher on a YOY basis. Volumes originating from within New Zealand and the EU-28 combined to account for over 70% of the total Chinese dairy import volumes throughout the month.
  • Nov ’16 Chinese dairy imports excluding whole milk powder and skim milk powder remained particularly strong, finishing up 25.5% YOY to a new record high for the month of November.
Additional Report Details According to GTIS, Nov ’16 total Chinese dairy import volumes increased 43.8% MOM on a daily average basis from the 12 month low experienced during the previous month while also remaining higher on a YOY basis, finishing up 20.4%. Total Chinese dairy import volumes reached a three year seasonal high for the month of November and an eight month high on an absolute basis throughout the month. Total Chinese dairy import volumes have increased on a YOY basis over 15 of the past 16 months through November. Import volumes originating from within New Zealand exceeded volumes originating from within the EU-28 for the first time in eight months during Nov ’16, despite growth within EU-28 volumes remaining higher on a YOY basis. Volumes originating from within New Zealand and the EU-28 combined to account for over 70% of the total Chinese dairy import volumes throughout the month. Nov ’16 Chinese whole milk powder (WMP) import volumes increased on a YOY basis for the first time in three months, finishing up 10.4%, while skim milk powder (SMP) import volumes increased slightly on a YOY basis throughout the month, finishing 0.1% higher than the previous year. Chinese WMP import volumes finished at a three year high for the month of November however SMP import volumes remained 26.4% below three year average figures for the month of November. Nov ’16 Chinese dairy imports excluding WMP and SMP remained strong, increasing by 25.5% YOY and finishing at a new record high for the month of November.
