U.S. Cattle on Feed Update – Jul ’16

According to USDA, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the U.S. for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.36 million head on Jul 1st, finishing 1.2% above the previous year. The Jul ’16 U.S. cattle on feed supply was up 120,000 head from Jul 1st of last year. US Cattle on Feed - Jul 16 The cattle on feed inventory included 6.87 million steers and steer calves, down 0.6% from 2015 levels, and 3.49 million heifers and heifer calves, up 4.8% from the previous year. US Steers and Heifers on Feed - Jul 16 Placements in feedlots during Jun ’16 totaled 1.53 million head, up 44,000 head, or 3.0%, from June of last year. Placements for those weighing 800 pounds or more increased the most YOY, finishing up 17.4%, while placements for those weighing 600-699 pounds and 700-700 pounds increased by 2.0% and 1.2% YOY, respectively, throughout the month. Placements for those weighing less than 600 pounds declined 17.1% during Jun ’16, which was the largest YOY decline on a percentage basis experienced throughout the past 12 months. Placements in feedlots declined 4.5% throughout the ’14-’15 production season, finishing at the lowest annual figure on record, but have rebounded by 1.5% YTD throughout the first three quarters of the ’15-’16 production season. US Cattle Placements - Jul 16 After deferred placements of heavier animals during the summer of 2014, weights from Aug ’14 – Jun ’16 indicate a continued trend towards heavier placements. Placements for those weighing 800 pounds or more have increased by 8.3% YOY over the 23 month period. US Cattle Placements by Weight Group - Jul 16 Jun ’16 cattle placements under 700 pounds declined by 55,000 head, or 9.2%, YOY, finishing lower on a YOY basis for the 20th time in the past 21 months. Cattle placements under 700 pounds were generally higher throughout the ’13-’14 production season, finishing up 4.7% YOY, however ’14-’15 placements under 700 pounds finished down 11.1% YOY to the lowest annual figure on record. ’15-’16 YTD placements under 700 pounds are down an additional 6.5% YOY throughout the first three quarters of the production season. US Cattle Placements under 700lbs - Jul 16 Jun ’16 cattle placements 700 pounds or heavier declined seasonally but finished up 99,000 head, or 11.2% YOY. Cattle placements 700 pounds or heavier finished the ’13-’14 production season down 3.3% after declining 9.0% over the second half of the production season but gained back a portion of the previous year declines throughout the ’14-’15 production season, finishing up 1.0% YOY. ’15-’16 YTD placements 700 pounds or heavier are up an additional 7.7% YOY throughout the first three quarters of the production season. US Cattle Placements over 700lbs - Jul 16 Marketings of fed cattle during Jun ’16 totaled 1.92 million head, up 165,000 head, or 9.4%, from June of last year, finishing at a four year high. Marketings have increased on a YOY basis over five consecutive months through June. Other disappearance totaled 61,000 head during Jun ’16, down 8,000 head, or 11.6% on a YOY basis.
