Chinese Dairy Imports Update – Oct ’16

Executive Summary Chinese dairy import figures provided by GTIS were recently updated with values spanning through Sep ’16. Highlights from the updated report include: • Total Chinese dairy import volumes declined on a YOY basis for the first time in 14 months during Sep ‘16, finishing down 1.6%. • Chinese dairy import volumes originating from within the EU-28 exceeded volumes originating from within New Zealand for the sixth consecutive month during Sep ’16, accounting for over 40% of total import volumes. • Sep ’16 Chinese dairy imports excluding whole milk powder and skim milk powder remained strong, finishing up 13.9% YOY to a new record high for the month of September. Additional Report Details According to GTIS, Sep ’16 total Chinese dairy import volumes declined 16.3% MOM on a daily average basis and 1.6% YOY, finishing lower on a YOY basis for the first time in 14 months. Total Chinese dairy import volumes remained at the second highest figure on record for the month of September. Import volumes originating from within the EU-28 continued to exceed volumes originating from within New Zealand for the sixth consecutive month during Sep ’16, accounting for over 40% of total import volumes. Sep ’16 Chinese whole milk powder (WMP) import volumes declined on a YOY basis for the first time in five months, finishing down 47.4%, while skim milk powder (SMP) import volumes finished lower on a YOY basis for the sixth consecutive month, declining by 51.2%. Chinese WMP and SMP import volumes each declined to a five year low for the month of September. Sep ’16 Chinese dairy imports excluding WMP and SMP remained strong, however, increasing by 13.9% YOY and finishing at a new record high for the month of September.
