U.S. Cattle on Feed Update – Nov ’16 According to USDA, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the U.S. for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.67 million head on Nov 1st, finishing 1.3% below the previous year. The Nov ’16 U.S. cattle on feed supply was down 144,000 head from Nov 1st of last year. US Cattle on Feed - Nov 16 Placements in feedlots during Oct ’16 totaled 2.17 million head, down 115,000 head, or 5.0%, from October of last year. The YOY decline in placements was the largest experienced throughout the past 11 months. Placements for those weighing 800 pounds or more declined the most on a YOY basis during Oct ’16, finishing down 16.9%. Placements weighing less than 600 pounds declined for the sixth consecutive month, finishing down 5.4%, while placements for those weighing 600-699 pounds declined 0.9%. The aforementioned declines more than offset a 9.3% YOY increase in placements of those weighing 700-799 pounds. Placements in feedlots declined 4.4% throughout the ’14-’15 production season, finishing at the lowest annual figure on record, but rebounded by 2.2% throughout the’15-’16 production season. US Cattle Placements - Nov 16 After deferred placements of heavier animals during the summer of 2014, a trend towards heavier placements was experienced throughout the past two years. Placements for those weighing 800 pounds or more increased by 8.8% YOY over the 24 month period ending Aug ’16, but have declined by a total of 9.6% on a YOY basis over the past two months. US Cattle Placements by Weight Group - Nov 16 Oct ’16 cattle placements under 700 pounds declined by 40,000 head, or 3.4%, YOY, finishing lower on a YOY basis for the seventh time in the past eight months. Cattle placements under 700 pounds were generally higher throughout the ’13-’14 production season, finishing up 4.8% YOY, however ’14-’15 placements under 700 pounds finished down 11.0% YOY to the lowest annual figure on record. Placements under 700 pounds declined an additional 5.4% throughout the ’15-’16 production season. US Cattle Placements under 700lbs - Nov 16 Oct ’16 cattle placements 700 pounds or heavier declined by 75,000 head, or 6.8%, on a YOY basis, finishing at a four year low for the month of October. Cattle placements 700 pounds or heavier finished the ’13-’14 production season down 3.3% after declining 9.0% over the second half of the production season but gained back a portion of the previous year declines throughout the ’14-’15 production season, finishing up 1.0% YOY. Placements 700 pounds or heavier increased an additional 7.7% YOY throughout the ’15-’16 production season, finishing at a 13 year high. US Cattle Placements over 700lbs - Nov 16 Marketings of fed cattle during Oct ’16 totaled 1.71 million head, up 75,000 head, or 4.6%, from October of last year. Marketings of fed cattle have increased on a YOY basis over eight of the past nine months through October. Other disappearance totaled 57,000 head during Oct ’16, down 18,000 head, or 24.0% on a YOY basis. US Cattle Marketings - Nov 16
