Ethanol Rail Movements Update – Dec ’16

Sep ’16 ethanol rail movements of 18.5 million barrels declined 8.5% on a daily average basis from five month high experienced during the previous month but remained 2.4% above historical average figures. Movement of Fuel Ethanol by Rail - Dec 16 Ethanol rail movements finished 3.8% lower on a year-over-year (YOY) basis throughout Sep ’16 however 2016 YTD rail movements remain up 4.3% YOY throughout the first three quarters of 2016. Movement of Fuel Ethanol by Rail2 - Dec 16 Ethanol rail movements have ranged from 53% – 71% of monthly ethanol production since the beginning of 2014. Sep ’16 ethanol rail movements accounted for 61.8% of monthly production, which was slightly below the historical average of 62.7%. Movement of Fuel Ethanol by Rail3 - Dec 16 Ethanol rail movement figures are broken out by Petroleum Administration for Defense District (PADD) for both originating rail movements and destinations of shipments. The U.S. is regionally divided into five PADDs, which include the East Coast, Midwest, Gulf Coast, Rocky Mountain and West Coast. Petroleum Admin for Defense Districts - Dec 16 Nearly 98% of rail movements originated in PADD 2 (Midwest) during Sep ’16, with the remaining volumes originating in PADD 3 (Gulf Coast). Nearly 8.0 million barrels of ethanol rail movements were destined to PADD 1 (East Coast) during Sep ’16, leading all regional districts. Sep 16 US Fuel Ethanol Rail Movements by Destination - Dec 16 Ethanol rail movements destined to PADD 1 (East Coast) accounted for over two fifths of the total shipments during Sep ’16. Combined shipments to PADD 1 (East Coast), PADD 5 (West Coast) and PADD 3 (Gulf Coast) consisted of nearly 90% of total ethanol rail movements, with minimal amounts being shipped to PADD 2 (Midwest), PADD 4 (Rocky Mountain) and Canada. Sep 16 US Fuel Ethanol Rail Movements by Destination2 - Nov 16 Ethanol rail movements destined to PADD 1 (East Coast) have accounted for between 39% – 56% of the total monthly shipments historically.
