2018 YTD U.S. Dairy Exports Update – Jun ’18

U.S. dairy exports are on pace to reach a new record high annual level throughout the first four months of 2018. Total YTD U.S. butterfat, cheese, whey and nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder export volumes have all increased on a YOY basis over the period. Total Dairy: Throughout the first four months of 2018, total U.S. dairy export volumes have been led by shipments destined to Mexico, followed by shipments destined to China, Canada and the Philippines. Total U.S. dairy export volumes destined to the aforementioned countries have accounted for over half of the total U.S. dairy exports over the period. cid:image004.png@01D403EF.06328BF0 Total U.S. dairy export volumes destined to Mexico have increased most significantly on a YOY basis throughout the first four months of 2018, followed by total dairy export volumes destined to China, Indonesia and Vietnam. cid:image005.png@01D403EF.06328BF0 Total U.S. dairy export volumes destined to Asia and North America have accounted for the vast majority of total growth since 2000. cid:image006.png@01D403EF.06328BF0 Butterfat: Throughout the first four months of 2018, U.S. butterfat export volumes have been led by shipments destined to Canada, followed closely by shipments destined to Mexico. U.S. butterfat export volumes destined to Canada and Mexico have accounted for nearly two-thirds of the total U.S. butterfat exports over the period. U.S. butterfat export volumes destined to Mexico have increased most significantly on a YOY basis throughout the first four months of 2018, followed by butterfat export volumes destined to Canada and Honduras. U.S. butterfat export volumes destined to North America have accounted for the vast majority of recent growth. U.S. butterfat export volumes destined to Africa and the Middle East declined sharply shortly after the abolition of the EU-28 milk production quota system. Cheese: Throughout the first four months of 2018, U.S. cheese export volumes have been led by shipments destined to Mexico, followed by shipments destined to South Korea and Japan. U.S. cheese export volumes destined to the aforementioned countries have accounted for over half of the total U.S. cheese exports over the period. U.S. cheese export volumes destined to Japan have increased most significantly on a YOY basis throughout the first four months of 2018, followed by cheese export volumes destined to China, South Korea and Mexico. U.S. cheese export volumes destined to Canada have declined most significantly on a YOY basis over the period. U.S. cheese export volumes destined to Asia, North America and Central & South America have accounted for the vast majority of total growth since 2000. Whey: Throughout the first four months of 2018, U.S. whey export volumes have been led by shipments destined to China, followed by shipments destined to Mexico. U.S. whey export volumes destined to China and Mexico have accounted for over half of the total U.S. whey exports over the period, with China accounting for over 40% of the total U.S. whey export market share. U.S. whey export volumes destined to China have increased most significantly on a YOY basis throughout the first four months of 2018, followed by whey volumes destined to Japan, Mexico and Malaysia. U.S. whey export volumes destined to Canada and New Zealand have declined most significantly on a YOY basis over the period. U.S. whey export volumes destined to Asia have accounted for the vast majority of total growth since 2000. Nonfat Dry Milk / Skim Milk Powder: Throughout the first four months of 2018, U.S. nonfat dry milk / skim milk powder (NFDM/SMP) export volumes have been led by shipments destined to Mexico, followed by shipments destined to Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. U.S. NFDM/SMP export volumes destined to the aforementioned countries have accounted for over two-thirds of the total U.S. NFDM/SMP exports over the period, with Mexico accounting for over 40% of the total U.S. NFDM/SMP export market share. U.S. NFDM/SMP export volumes destined to Mexico have increased most significantly on a YOY basis throughout the first four months of 2018, followed by NFDM/SMP export volumes destined to Indonesia and Vietnam. U.S. NFDM/SMP export volumes destined to China have declined most significantly on a YOY basis over the period. U.S. NFDM/SMP export volumes destined to Asia and North America have accounted for the vast majority of total growth since 2000. Largest Movers by Product: When breaking out U.S. dairy exports by product and destination, on a volume basis, the largest increases in dairy exports have been led by NFDM/SMP export volumes destined to Mexico, Indonesia and Vietnam, followed by whey exports destined to China and Japan.
