According to the USDA, the current corn and soybean crops identified to be in good or excellent condition each continued to decline from the previous week but finished equal to or slightly above analyst expectations.
Corn:
Corn dough as of the week ending Sep 6th was 97% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 87% completed and the five year average pace of 94% completed.
Corn dent as of the week ending Sep 6th was 79% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 51% completed and the five year average pace of 71% completed.
Corn maturation as of the week ending Sep 6th was 25% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of ten percent completed and the five year average pace of 19% completed.
61% of the current corn crop was identified to be in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Sep 6th, down one percent from the previous week but up one percent in the ‘excellent’ category. The current corn crop identified to be in good or excellent condition finished consistent with analyst expectations. 14% of the current corn crop was identified as poor or very poor, unchanged from the previous week.
26% of the Iowa corn crop was identified to be in poor or very poor condition as of the week ending Sep 6th, up one percent from the previous week. Millions of acres of Iowa corn and soybean crops were heavily damaged by the Aug 10th derecho. Just 43% of the Iowa corn crop was identified to be in good or excellent condition, reaching a seven year seasonal low level.
Soybeans:
Soybean leaf dropping was 20% completed as of the week ending Sep 6th, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of seven percent completed and the five year average pace of 16% completed.
65% of the current soybean crop was identified to be in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Sep 6th, down one percent from the previous week. The current soybean crop identified to be in good or excellent condition remained slightly above analyst expectations of 64%. Ten percent of the current soybean crop was identified as poor or very poor, unchanged from the previous week.
20% of the Iowa soybean crop was identified to be in poor or very poor condition as of the week ending Sep 6th, up two percent from the previous week. Just 47% of the Iowa soybean crop was identified to be in good or excellent condition, reaching a seven year seasonal low level.
